Virginia's Garden is
"Gardening On A Slope"- with the lower level at Dyer's
Bay road and the uppermost garden at the base of a section of
the Niagara Escarpment. The lower level includes rock gardens
that have paths to allow visitors to explore and get close
enough to see and smell the individual plants. On the steepest
areas of the slope the beds are terraced and are planted with a
variety of bulbs and perennials. |
 |
 |
Roses are included
within most of the flowerbeds, and an herb garden enjoys the
sunniest spot at the top of the slope. There are several types
of Lavender, Dianthus, and Phlox that either perch on or cascade
from the rocks that surround each bed.
|
The highest level of the garden is in
the shade of the cliff by 5:00 pm in mid-summer, and most of the other
gardens get full sun. There are also a few gardens that are shaded;
these are planted with ferns and other shade loving species.

Virginia's Garden
can be best described as "Cottage " gardening in both
form and style. The raised beds were built over several years
with local stone and trucked in soil. Some of the beds are
thirteen years old and a few have been rebuilt and renovated
over this last year. A few years ago half barrels became a
feature of the top garden. These are planted with Cannas,
annuals, and Dahlias in very bright shades of red and orange
that delights both gardeners and many of the visitors to my
garden. |

Children are welcome
and enjoy checking out the sundial to see if it really can tell
the time, walking the paths to see where they lead, patting
plants such as bronze fennel, and following butterflies and
humming birds in season.
Perennial plants offered for sale
are grown on site and photos of any not currently blooming are
available for viewing. |
Access: There are two entrances to the
garden: to the left are stairs with a secure railing; to the right is
a fairly steep slope which has been navigated with mechanized
wheelchairs and those propelled manually with the assistance of fellow
garden visitors.
